How to Style a Bookshelf: A Step-by-Step Method
Style bookshelves that look considered, not cluttered: edit first, anchor with books, mix vertical and horizontal stacks, use triangles, odd numbers and space.
About
PINKNINA LIVING is an independent journal about designing and living in a home. We publish practical guides, inspiration and free planning tools for people who are decorating, furnishing or rethinking their own space.

Most decisions about a home are made by the people who live in it, usually without a designer, often on a budget and nearly always with a tape measure in one hand and a phone in the other. Much of the advice available to them is either aspirational photography with no explanation, or lists of products. We wanted something in between: guides that explain why a room works and give the numbers needed to make it work in your own home.
So each guide focuses on a real decision: how big the rug should be, how high to hang a pendant, which paint finish survives a hallway, how much space a dining chair needs. We explain the rule of thumb, where it comes from and when to break it.
Alongside the guides we build free planning tools, starting with calculators for paint, rug sizes and curtains, and keep a gallery of interiors grouped by room.
Guides are researched, written and edited by the PINKNINA LIVING editorial team. Before publishing we cross-check measurements and recommendations against manufacturer guidance, published ergonomic and building standards and established interior design references, and we prefer ranges over single "correct" numbers, because rooms and people vary.
We are not a design studio and do not sell design services, furniture or products. We do not accept payment for coverage and do not use affiliate links. The site is funded by advertising, which is always labelled and kept separate from editorial content.
Read the details in our editorial policy.
Trends come and go, but a room built around your own routines, collections and memories never goes out of date. Our guides start from how a space is used and leave the styling to you.
We favour a calm palette, natural materials and fewer, better pieces, but our guides are written to work for any style. A rule about clearances is the same whether your sofa is minimalist or maximalist.
Keeping, repairing and reusing what you have usually beats replacing it. Where it matters, we say when a cheaper or simpler option will do.

If something in a guide does not match your experience, if a measurement looks wrong or if there is a topic you would like us to cover, we would like to hear about it. Reader questions shape what we write next.

Hang curtains like a professional: how far poles should extend, how high to mount them, fullness ratios, lengths, heading styles, linings and how to measure.
Plan layered lighting room by room: ambient, task and accent layers, lumens per square metre, colour temperature, CRI, dimmers and where to place lamps.
